San Giovanni Laterano

Built by Constantine the Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first public church to be built in Rome. It was the main church in Rome for about a thousand years and has survived being sacked by invading barbarians, burned in two separate fires and has had numerous renovations.
